Month 18 to 24

Month 18 to 24

Congratulations! Your little treasure has been a lively toddler for about six months now. The time between the 18th month and the second birthday is an exciting phase full of adventure and discovery. In these months, your child becomes increasingly independent and continues to evolve at a rapid pace. They gain new capabilities in the areas of language, motor skills, social behaviour and cognitive abilities, making astonishing new discoveries every day.

The 18th to 24th month in brief

Motor development

The motor skills of your little explorer or your daring adventurer are becoming significantly more developed. Your child is getting faster and more skilful at walking and running, and venturing into more complex movements. Many children also start to climb on furniture, which requires special care to avoid accidents. Ensure that your surroundings are child safe and keep dangerous items out of reach. Your child is increasingly reaching for smaller objects and manipulating them, which can be seen when building with building blocks or drawing.

Language development

The language skills of your little one are developing incredibly fast! Every day your little bundle of joy learns new words and can actively use them. Your child understands a lot of words and is starting to integrate them into everyday life. They are now starting to form simple two-word sentences, such as “Mummy help” or “Daddy there”. These sentences will help your child express their needs and wishes more clearly. Keep in mind, however, that each child is unique, including in their language development. And remember to write down the funniest word creations for later. You’ll often chuckle thinking back on them.

As your child’s curiosity grows, they will ask simple questions such as “What is that?” or “Where is it?”. These questions show how much your little sweetheart is interested in the world around them. And your child also imitates the language of adults and other children. This imitation is an important part of the learning process and helps them master new words and phrases. It’s an exciting time that comes with new surprises every day.

Cognitive development

You will be amazed at the progress made by your little explorer in thinking and problem-solving skills. Your child is beginning to understand that objects continue to exist even when they are not visible. They can solve simple puzzles and show interest in more complex games and activities. Your little cutie learns a lot through imitation and is starting to copy your behaviour as well as that of other adults and children. You’ve probably watched with fascination as your child constantly discovers and tries out new things. Your days are packed with surprises, and you are sure to experience a certain degree of pride in how quickly your child is developing and growing.

Social and emotional development

Your child is starting to interact more with other children and learning to understand simple rules and social norms. They are becoming more independent and want to do many things alone, such as getting dressed or eating. There may also be some initial phases of defiance in which your child tests their independence and explores their own boundaries.

Moment of discovery between the 18th and 24th month: “I and the world”

Your child is gaining a better understanding of themselves and their surroundings. They are learning to say “I” and recognise themself in the mirror. They show great interest in their surroundings and always want to explore and discover everything immediately.

BimBubble tip

Let your child do simple tasks, such as getting dressed or helping to set the table. This fosters independence. Speak to your child frequently and answer questions to support language development. Create a safe environment where your child can run, climb and play freely. Go to the playground regularly and organise play-dates with other children to promote their social skills.
