Breast milk can be pumped using a breast pump and stored frozen. It is important to note that the sucking reflex of the breast pump is not identical to that of your child. It takes a bit of time to get the hang of pumping.
Pumped breast milk can be stored as follows:
- At room temperature (16–29 °C): 3–4 hours
- In the fridge (below 4 °C): 3 days
- In the freezer (below –17 °C): 6 months
Do not thaw the breast milk until it is actually needed. Please note: once thawed, breast milk should never be refrozen.
You can find more information on breastfeeding from Breastfeeding Promotion Switzerland. You can also contact a specialist if you have any questions.
