Breast engorgement

If a part of your breast feels hard or is sore to the touch, this may be a sign of breast engorgement. This is when milk in the milk ducts is unable to flow out. Here are some helpful tips:  
  • Place a damp, warm towel on your breast for 10 minutes before breastfeeding.
  • A damp towel may help after breastfeeding. Leave it on your breast for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Massage your breast in circular motions.
  • Always start by giving your baby the breast with the engorgement. Ensure that your baby’s lower jaw is pointing towards the painful area. Using this position can clear the blocked milk ducts.
  • If your breast doesn’t get better, contact a medical professional.
